The stories found in A Haunted House reflect Virginia Woolf's experimental writing style and act as an enlightening introduction to the longer fiction of this pioneer novelist. Gathering works from the previously published Monday or Tuesday, as well as stories published in American and British magazines, this book compiles some of the best shorter fiction of one of the most important writers of our time.

An absolutely stunning collection. If I hadn't already started reading Virginia Woolf with 'To the Lighthouse', this would have been an excellent introduction to her writing style. I highly recommend it. I liked just about every little piece of fiction in here but my favorites are 'Kew Gardens'and 'Lappin and Lapinova'. 'Lappin and Lapinova' is the best short story that I've ever read. It rings so true to my own life and secret things that I share with my fiancee. Beautiful.
It's crazy that my favorite authors are Ernest Hemingway and Virginia Woolf. His writing style is so minimalist, hard and true where Woolf's so descriptive and meandering. You have to dig for the truth that she's discussing. To me, I see the two authors as two very different sides to the same coin that is literature.

A Haunted House and Other Short Stories edition by Virginia Woolf Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I found Woolf hard to read, often going from a last name to a first one to give the impression of two different people.
Her characters are bazaar with stories seem to ramble on to nowhere where men make all the decisions and women sit quietly.
The people who find her interesting are women who feel shut out of life because of their sex.
But there I was in a class of mainly women, run by a woman, in a learning center run by a woman.
That situation of women being second class citizens may have existed in England in the early 1900's, but it does not seem to exist today.
Surprised at how much I enjoyed these short stories. Excellent read and good for discussions
I'm not a Woolf fan actually, but these short stories were interesting bites of her style. Generally I find her prose to be a bit obtuse and the stream of consciousness prose heavy. I get a bit weary of overhearing the characters' meandering thoughts and their fragmented complexities; and her long sentences tend to leave me mentally breathless. But one short story in this anthology, A Haunted House, was a lovely story about ghosts that I really enjoyed probably because it was more direct than her other works and short enough to "get it." And ghosts stories are especially interesting to me.
Calling this collection "short stories" can be slightly misleading. I understand why a lot of people hate Woolf's writing, I really do get it. Reading Woolf reminds me of the first time I tasted beer and wine I took a sip and then politely declined any further tastings for a while. After a while, I decided I was missing something, so I gave them both another try. After the 5th or maybe 500th sip, I realized I was beginning to enjoy the taste. Such as it was with Woolf. The first time I read her in college, I wanted to drop the class entirely and avoid that particular profession at all costs. Then, a couple of years ago I woke up one morning with this weird craving to read her again. I sat down with "To The Lighthouse" and literary fell in love. Since then, I have not been able to get enough.

Woolf's shorter pieces are more difficult to read than her longer pieces, in my humble opinion. As I mentioned before, coining her shorter work as "stories" is a bit misleading, especially if you are not familiar with her work. Don't get me wrong, there are some more traditional stories in this collection ("The Legacy" is one of my all time favorite short stories and worth the cover price alone); however, there are a lot of pieces that are more impressions and reflections on a single moment than what most people would consider an actual story. These impressionistic pieces are quite short (some less than two pages) but require more time to read than some of the longer ones. That might sound a bit like reading poetry and maybe it is. As your eyes read and reread the same lines, suddenly the bigger picture comes into clearer focus and you realize that Woolf has just transformed you into a flower gazing up out of your flowerbed at passerbyers in the park. Neat, huh? Okay, maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you are looking for a little challenge and up for a bit of mental exercise, this collection is certainly worth a second glance.
Excellent
Awkward writing style yet very interesting and compelling. Her ideas see incomplete unless you take the time to try to understand what the author is really saying. She leaves clues to the meaning. Look for them
Frequently overlooked short tales by one of the most important writers of the 20th century. These were collected and published posthumously by Leonard Woolf. Some V.W. had approved for publication. Some were still works in progress.
